Capstone Projects: The 8th grade Capstone classes participated in their Capstone Symposium on Friday, May 30, 2025. After a trimester of going through the process of researching, interviewing, planning, and organizing, they invited their stakeholders, and anyone who had assisted in the trimester-long process, to see their final products.

Senior Trifold Day
Pre-K programs from all over Maine were invited to celebrate their graduation to Kindergarten at a Portland Sea Dogs game! DES Pre-K kiddos joined the parade all the way around the field, then some of us stayed to watch the baseball game!

Chicks in Class: Miss Colpitts' class incubated chickens and quails for about three weeks, learning about eggs and their development. This week they got to enjoy watching them hatch, learning animal handling safety, and reading to the chicks!
Miss O'Connor's Marine Biology Class enjoyed a seal watching cruise
SRO Justin Onofrio Teaching Students: To bring awareness and education to young people regarding safe driving and operating under the influence. Golf carts + teen drivers + purposely putting very expensive .15 - .2 intox goggles into their hands sounded like a perfect idea. With a mini lesson and a nice walk through the course, the drivers were off!
ELO Class Field Trip
Noah Preble, ELO Teacher, took students Emily Woods, Grace Averill, Lana Waite, Colby Averill-Curtis and Alyssa Ellis to a Medical Boot Camp hosted by UMA.

5Th Grade Events at DES
College Essays: Five fifth-grade and five fourth-grade students were selected as winners of a college essay scholarship. To celebrate their achievement, they attended a special event at Region 9. Each student received a personalized apron before joining Chef Robinson in making their own pizzas. While the pizzas were baking, the students were recognized for their hard work and celebrated with ice cream sundaes alongside their families. At the end of the event, they proudly took their homemade pizzas home to enjoy.Grade 5 preparing for essay scholarship night.

Dissection: Students in Ms. O’Connors Maine Wildlife Class were learning about birds and got the chance to dissect Owl pellets.

JMG FIELD TRIP
JMG students had the opportunity to attend a Career Exploration Event hosted by JMG and UMF.
Pictures of the Capstone Project organized by Caiden, Emily, Melody, and Olivia. They are growing flowers and veggies for community use and donation. It is totally from scratch, and they are getting permission and organizing every step of the process.
Cam's deal: Make it through to graduation and get a ride in the mustang on the last day. (Well, not the last day but the last sunny day!)
Personal Finance Class at DHS
Mrs. Pealatere's Personal Finance classes went "car shopping." Thanks to generous staff, they checked out 4 used vehicles and used a checklist the students had learned about in class including the penny tire tread test. They then had to use Kelly Blue Book to price the vehicle and, in a later class, had to pick one car and attempt to negotiate a better price.
Yellow Tulip Hope Garden: This past fall, the Dirigo Middle School students planted yellow tulip bulbs for our Yellow Tulip Hope Garden with the hopes of "smashing the stigma of mental illness, one tulip at a time."

Annual Special Olympics Day in RSU 56
Senior Trifold Party: Mrs. Pealetare hosted a Trifold party for seniors. She included pizza and snacks plus all the supplies to accomplish the task. Students did a great job and helped each other also.

Seniors at DHS went to WOXO for a fundraiser for Project Graduation and raised almost $1400.

Busy, busy, busy in Mrs. Holmquist's class
Final day with practicum teacher Colby Lewis.They made chocolate chip waffle cookies to celebrate him.
To kick off their Native American unit, local MicMac Sister Bernadette, who worked on the Cree Reservation in Alberta, Canda, as the principal and teacher for 50 years, compared Plains Tribes with Woodland Tribes.
After finishing Midsummer Night's Dream, students decided, as a PBIS activity, to build fairy houses. The entire class went up to the "secret playground" and built fairy houses.
